Week 8 Wildcard Letter

  1. Nice. This always bugged me. Newark, DE: The only place in the world you can actually get a ticket for jaywalking. I haven't seen them around much lately, maybe I just walk at lucky times. And while I'm sure the cops are looking out for our safety I'm also sure that trying to get that extra $51 is a motivation too.

  2. I agree. It's hard to get too angry because they are just looking out for our safety. But, it is ridiculous when they give out tickets (and expensive at that) just for "looking like you were going to go". Cars go so fast through the crosswalks and down Main Street- they should look out for speeding cars just as they do for pedestrians jaywalking. It is a college campus and everyone needs to be careful because anything can happen.

  3. Wonderful letter! Every time myself or my friends see one of them hiding in the bushes with their clipboard we instantly text each other to warn not to jaywalk that day. I had a friend who ended up with a ticket that was $85, guess they just choose whichever ridiculous amount they feel like.

There are certainly better ways for them to be looking out for our safety. We are all old enough to know when it is safe to cross the street, and if for whatever reason someone is dumb enough to go when it isn't safe, i'd have to say being hit by a car is a pretty good natural consequence. That person will definitely look both ways next time.

  4. I love this letter! This has been a new thing that police officers are OBSESSED with and it's so annoying. I live off of South Chapel and I jaywalk all the time! It's impossible to go to a crosswalk because it always seems to be out of the way and come on, we walk far enough, I'd rather not back-track if I don't truly have to. I think that the police decided to crack down upon this after the incident of the two girls getting hit by the car one night on South Chapel this fall. The difference is that they were probably intoxicated AND it was night time! It's obviously a lot harder for cars to see people at night, but even so, the girls shouldn't have been crossing when they did. I understand the need for safety, but if you're an idiot and want to cross the street when a car is coming, like Jessica said above my comment, you kind of deserve the consequence! Not to sound mean of course. Just don't be dumb!

  5. Someone needs to take these cops to NYC, so they can witness the masses jaywalking. It is absolutely ridiculous that on a college campus, students are being punished for crossing the street "inappropriately". I think they need to use judgment as to when a jaywalking ticket might be okay. For example, in the situation listed above where drunk girls stumbled in front of a car. But there isn't a car in sight, I say cross the street.
